Sophrology to the rescue of the students.

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

Far from their families, isolated in their rooms and unable to go to classrooms and lecture halls to follow their lessons, many students are in a situation of extreme distress. In everything the students say, it is not the precariousness that emerges but the isolation added to a heavy workload.

I interviewed Anaïs, a bachelor student in Eco-Management at the University of Reims Champagne Ardenne.

"It has become very difficult to live in a 10m² studio every day, the loneliness drives you crazy. It’s very hard psychologically. Added to this the excessive workload. The teachers consider that since we are at home, we have time to do everything. But we lack support to answer our questions. Some lectures have been recorded but the rest is done through Zoom. I don't have the fibre optic network, I use the 4G and sometimes my connection is poor or it's the teacher's. You have to have the mind to hold on. Besides, with the curfew I can't even go out. I work my lessons from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and sometimes throughout the week I don't even see the sun. I wake up in the morning but I don't feel like learning anymore. In fact, many of my friends have stopped classes and gone back to their parents. The situation is really depressing. ”

Getting out of your own bubble ...

How do you get out of your bubble and break away from loneliness when your motivation is no longer there? Anaïs continues: “To feel good, I watch series on Netflix, it helps me get away from it all a bit. Otherwise I regularly call my parents, we got a little closer since the start of the lockdown. "

What sophrology brings to students.

Anaïs tells me: "As I need to express my frustrations and my negative emotions, relaxation therapy is very beneficial for me. It gives me the necessary support and it's important to know that I'm not alone. I suffer from intense anxiety and because of it I have excruciating insomnia. The visualizations during the sophrology sessions soothe me and help me regain quality sleep so that I have energy throughout the day. "

Note to students:

Physically, dynamic relaxation and mental suggestion exercises awaken feelings of vitality and help release tension. They provide a feeling of relaxation, physical and mental well-being which allows you to come out of the permanent state of distress in which you are due to your isolation. They provide a release from back, head or stomach tension, anxiety attacks...

On a mental level, they activate focus, motivation and creativity, allowing you to become more aware of yourself. And through training you will learn to optimize your abilities, to live according to your values and to develop daily serenity to have confidence in the future.

Do not hesitate to ask the BAPUs (university psychological aid offices) and your universities to make an appointment in relaxation therapy.

Take good care of yourself.

Cultivate optimism and impermanence.
